Peguis First Nation and neighbouring Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba declared states of emergency on April 18â19, 2026 as forecasts indicate the Fisher River will likely breach its banks in the coming days.
Chief Stan Bird said flooding is now âa certaintyâ and that evacuations may be required; provincial modelling projects river basins peaking between April 23 and 28.
Peguis, one of Manitobaâs largest First Nations with more than 10,000 members (about 3,800 living on reserve), is working to protect roughly 225 high-risk homes using sandbags, clay dikes, tiger tubes and temporary barriers.
Volunteers, provincial crews and federal-supported teams â including 63 members of veteran-led Team Rubicon â and the Canadian Red Cross are assisting.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew visited to help sandbag, and authorities noted emergency measures will allow access to funding and mandatory evacuations if needed.
The community has endured repeated flooding (about 12 major floods since 2000) and has pending litigation seeking C$1 billion in damages over the 2022 flood, underscoring long-term vulnerability and contested plans for permanent flood prevention.
