Forza Horizon 6 leaks via unencrypted Steam preload

📰 Full Story

Files for Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 6 briefly appeared online on May 11, 2026 after an unencrypted Steam preload was reportedly pushed to Valve’s backend, allowing users to download roughly 150–155GB of game data ahead of launch. The leak surfaced nine days before the game’s planned May 19 general release and four days before early access for Premium Edition buyers on May 15. Piracy sites and torrent forums circulated cracked copies and short gameplay clips; Reddit threads were moderated and takedown notices followed. Reports say the leaked build is unstable, missing online features and updates, and that some users who used leaked copies have been subject to account bans. Microsoft, Playground Games and Valve had not issued a full public explanation at the time of reporting. Forza Horizon 6 — a major title for Xbox Game Studios and Game Pass with over 500,000 Steam pre-orders reported — will also launch on PS5 later in the year.

Sony Urges PS4 Owners To Buy PS5 For GTA 6

📰 Full Story

Multiple outlets reported on May 9-10, 2026 that Sony has begun sending targeted emails and PlayStation notifications to PlayStation 4 users urging them to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch. Messages reportedly targeted users who have wishlisted GTA 6 or are identified as “top Grand Theft Auto 5 players,” and some versions of the notices referenced a November 19, 2026 release date. Coverage from IGN, Kotaku, Destructoid and TheGamer links the outreach to an existing marketing partnership between Sony and Rockstar/Take-Two, and comes amid Take-Two’s stated plans to ramp up marketing this summer. Reports also note that one email batch may have revealed an ESRB age rating, though that detail remains unconfirmed. Industry watchers have speculated a trailer or further announcements could arrive soon, possibly ahead of Take-Two’s May 21 earnings call. The campaign arrives as Sony has recently raised PS5 prices, adding a commercial context to the push to convert PS4 owners.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii indicated a livestream to mark the franchise’s 40th anniversary is planned for May 27 and that it will include an announcement about the “next game,” raising hopes that long-awaited details for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate could finally be revealed. Horii made the comments on the KosoKoso podcast; that episode has since been made private. Square Enix has not formally confirmed the stream. The publisher used a similar 35th‑anniversary broadcast in 2021 to unveil multiple projects, including the first glimpse of Dragon Quest XII, and has since released remakes and spin‑offs while providing few updates on the mainline title. Developers have also been repurposing older entries in HD‑2D and other formats, and fans are watching to see whether a full progress update, release window, trailers or new remakes will be shown. The May 27 date would come nearly five years after Dragon Quest XII was first teased in May 2021, fueling speculation and intense expectation among the series’ global fan base.

Double Fine files to unionize with CWA

📰 Full Story

Employees at Double Fine Productions, the San Francisco studio behind Psychonauts, Kiln and other titles, filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on May 7, 2026 to form a union with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The petition covers all 42 regular full- and part-time staff and requests both voluntary recognition from Microsoft and an NLRB election to secure representation. CWA said the move aims to preserve the studio’s commitments to creative excellence, diversity and inclusion, and worker quality of life. Microsoft, which acquired Double Fine in 2019, has signalled a neutral stance toward the drive. The filing is the latest in a wave of unionisation across Microsoft-owned game teams that has included Blizzard groups, id Software and QA teams at Raven and ZeniMax, reflecting broader organising activity in the U.S. games industry. Double Fine released multiplayer pottery game Kiln in April 2026; the petition comes amid recent restructuring and leadership changes across Xbox Game Studios.

Commenters add that SF cost pressures and Double Fine’s small scale matter: studio-level union drives can strengthen worker bargaining and later coalesce industry-wide, but some warn unionization could increase closure risk for studios without strong financial leverage.

📰 Full Story

Skywind, the volunteer-led project recreating The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind inside Skyrim’s engine, has posted its most detailed update in nearly two years as it approaches a long-anticipated finish after roughly 14 years of development. Dev diaries and reports from multiple outlets put 2D art near-complete (about 99%), 3D assets around 90–99%, visual effects roughly 80%, and writing close to finished (mid-90s). Voice acting has been largely recorded (reported near 92–99%), while sound design and voice mastering lag behind (around 65% and 12% respectively in one update). The team says Vvardenfell is largely rebuilt—10 of 13 exterior regions are 90–100% complete while Red Mountain sits near 40%—but there is still no release date. Skywind has functioned as a “relay race” of volunteers: more than 1,000 contributors have passed through the project. The team continues to recruit help and is already planning post-launch work to recreate the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions.

Daybreak Game Company and Cold Iron Studios have officially announced Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, due to launch in summer 2026 for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The sequel expands the original three-player cooperative shooter to four-player co-op, adds deeper squad mechanics, wider customization—including a fully customisable Specialist endgame class—five distinct classes, new weapons and abilities, an updated horde mode and “deadlier threats.” The game will support cross-platform play with in-game voice chat. Developers positioned the release as part of 20th Century Games’ celebration of the 40th anniversary of Aliens, after details first surfaced in a leaked 2024 pitch deck that had suggested an earlier timeframe. The reveal trailer shown in early May mixes cinematic sequences with gameplay footage and emphasises tactical teamwork and survival against Xenomorph swarms. The original Aliens: Fireteam Elite (2021) remains available across platforms and on subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass, offering a launch base of players ahead of the sequel.

Nintendo hikes Switch 2 prices, trims sales forecast

📰 Full Story

TOKYO, May 8 (Reuters) - Nintendo said on Friday it will raise prices for its Switch 2 console and other Switch products as it forecast lower hardware sales for the coming year while maintaining near-term profit. The company sold about 19.86 million Switch 2 units in the fiscal year ended March 31 and now expects to sell 16.5 million in the year to March 2027. Nintendo will revise the Japanese-language Switch 2 MSRP to ¥59,980 from ¥49,980 effective May 25, and raise prices in the U.S., Canada and Europe to $499.99 (from $449.99) and corresponding regional levels on Sept. 1. Management said higher component costs, particularly memory, plus tariff pressures and exchange-rate effects will add roughly ¥100 billion to costs this year. Nintendo also forecast software sales growth and highlighted hits such as Pokémon Pokopia, but investors flagged a thin first-party pipeline. The company projected operating profit around ¥370 billion for the year to March 2027 despite the headwinds.

Sony Warns PS5 Sales Fall, PS6 Plans Uncertain

📰 Full Story

Sony on May 8 reported a sharp slowdown in PlayStation 5 hardware sales and signalled uncertainty over the timing and pricing of a PlayStation 6 as a global memory-chip shortage lifts component costs. The group sold 1.5 million PS5 units in the fourth quarter, a 46% year-on-year drop, and 16 million over the fiscal year, taking lifetime PS5 sales to about 93.7 million. Sony forecast Games & Network Services sales would fall about 6% to 4.42 trillion yen for the year ahead, even as operating profit for the segment is expected to rise (driven by higher first-party software sales and the absence of last year’s impairment). Management said hardware sales will be based on the volume of memory it can secure at “reasonable prices,” and reiterated that PS6 launch timing and pricing remain undecided amid expectations that memory prices will stay high into fiscal 2027. The group also announced a buyback programme of up to 500 billion yen, and highlighted investments in AI tools and next-generation platform development.

Valve said it will open a reservation queue for its newly relaunched Steam Controller after the peripheral sold out within minutes of its May 4 launch and caused widespread checkout failures. The company will begin taking reservations on May 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific / 1 p.m. Eastern; customers who reserve will have their place in line saved and will receive order emails in reservation order when stock is replenished. Each account can reserve only one unit, users who already purchased a controller in the first wave are ineligible, accounts must be in good standing and have completed a Steam purchase before April 27, 2026, and buyers will have 72 hours to complete payment once notified. Valve plans to start fulfilling reservations next week in the United States and Canada, with the United Kingdom, European Union and Australia to follow in the coming weeks. The controller retails at $99; resellers were briefly listing units for several times that price on secondary markets. Valve said the move is intended to limit reseller and bot activity and improve the purchase experience for real customers.

NetherRealm Studios has confirmed it is “actively” pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, studio creative director Ed Boon told Collider in interviews published May 6-7, 2026. Boon said the developer is working on multiple projects — “a lot of pots on the stove” — that include not just games but other forms of media, and promised “a lot of great announcements” without providing titles, platforms, launch windows or roster and story details. The comments follow the 2023 Mortal Kombat 1 reboot, which Eurogamer notes sold about 8 million units, and arrive as the Mortal Kombat 2 film debuts in cinemas. Reporting also points to persistent rumors that a third Injustice game could be on NetherRealm’s roadmap, though Boon did not confirm that project specifically. NetherRealm and publisher Warner Bros. Mixtape: praised coming-of-age music game

📰 Full Story

Mixtape, a music‑driven narrative game from Australian developer Beethoven & Dinosaur, launched on May 7, 2026 to broad critical praise. Published by Annapurna Interactive and released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the three‑ to four‑hour title follows Stacey Rockford and friends in a northern California high‑school setting as a curated mixtape triggers stylised flashbacks. Reviewers applauded its licensed soundtrack, inventive mixed‑media visuals (stop‑motion influences and filmic splices), varied mini‑games and sharp dialogue; IGN gave it a perfect score, while Kotaku, Game Informer and other outlets offered strong endorsements. Highlights cited across reviews include a frantic shopping‑cart escape during a house party, rhythm‑based headbanging segments and a deliberately awkward “first kiss” tongue minigame. Critics noted the game’s focus on mood and nostalgia over branching mechanics and fail states. The Guardian offered a more mixed take, praising the aesthetics but arguing the emotional throughline is undercooked. Mixtape’s polished presentation and curated 90s‑tinged tracklist positioned it as a standout short-form narrative experience in 2026’s release slate.

Nintendo announced a surprise remake of Star Fox 64, titled simply Star Fox, in a Nintendo Direct on May 6–7, 2026. The Switch 2-exclusive game will launch June 25, 2026 and is built as a cinematic reimagining of the 1997 classic with rebuilt stage layouts, new cutscenes, full voice acting, an orchestral score, and a prologue expanding Fox McCloud’s backstory. New gameplay features include a Challenge Mode, a 4v4 online Battle Mode with matchmaking and three maps, co-op pilot/gunner GameShare, Joy‑Con 2 mouse controls, optional N64 controller support, AR GameChat avatars that mirror player expressions, and a roughly 14GB digital footprint. Nintendo is pricing the digital edition at $49.99 and the physical edition at $59.99. The reveal followed Fox McCloud’s cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and marks the franchise’s first major new release in a decade. Reaction has been mixed: players and critics praise the overhaul and multiplayer additions while many fans criticize the more realistic character models — including vocal commentary from original Star Fox artist Takaya Imamura, who said he prefers the film’s design.

📰 Full Story

Xbox will roll out a refreshed boot-up animation and updated start-up sound to Xbox Series X|S consoles on May 13, Microsoft’s Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on X on May 6. The short firmware update replaces the white-on-black sequence with a glossy, renewed green Xbox logo and a slightly altered, familiar startup chime. The change is part of a rapid series of brand and product moves since Sharma succeeded Phil Spencer in February, including restoring the ‘Xbox’ name from ‘Microsoft Gaming,’ cutting top-tier Xbox Game Pass prices, shelving the Copilot assistant, and making leadership hires from Microsoft’s CoreAI group. Sharma has also signalled a willingness to “reevaluate” exclusivity strategy for first-party titles, and the boot-up refresh arrives ahead of the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 and continued work on Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox platform. Several outlets noted the sound remains recognisably similar to the current sequence; the update is framed as a small but symbolic customer-facing change amid broader organizational shifts.

Griffin Gaming Partners on May 6 launched a $100 million Special Opportunities Fund (SOF) to finance independent game developers using a project-based, revenue-share model rather than traditional equity stakes. The Santa Monica firm, which manages about $1.5 billion, said the SOF has already invested in 15 titles — nine announced and six unannounced — with deal sizes typically ranging from several hundred thousand dollars up to about $5 million. Announced investments include Menace, Darkwood 2, Kinstrife, Vaunted, Highland Keep, Gilded Destiny, Begone Beast, Expedition: Into Darkness and Hellforged. Unannounced projects cover a sci-fi grand-strategy tie-in to a book/TV franchise, a gladiator management sim, a dinosaur multiplayer RPG and others. Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender will serve as managing director of the fund. Griffin emphasises aligned terms and a “no 100% recoup” approach — similar to Hooded Horse’s standard contracts that leave roughly 65% of revenue with studios — and lists industry advisors including producers Dylan Clark and Russell Binder. Griffin says it aims to support long-term developer control and transmedia potential for new IPs.

Valve releases Steam Controller CAD files for modders

📰 Full Story

Valve has published official CAD files for its newly launched Steam Controller and its magnetic charging 'puck', making surface STP and STL models and engineering drawings available on GitLab under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) licence. The files cover the external shells and reference areas that must remain unobstructed to preserve antenna and connector function; they do not include internal electronics. The controller, priced at $99, sold out shortly after the May 4 launch and Valve said it is working to restock. The Creative Commons licence allows non-commercial remixing, requires attribution and share-alike terms, and includes a note inviting companies to contact Valve about commercial accessories. Valve framed the release as an effort to encourage modders, 3D-print hobbyists and accessory makers to design grips, docks, cases and accessibility solutions, while warning that modifications may void warranty. The move follows Valve’s prior practice of sharing CAD assets for devices such as the Steam Deck and Index VR kit.

Dead as Disco, a music-driven “rhythm brawler” from indie developer Brain Jar Games, launched into Early Access on May 5–6, 2026 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Priced at $24.99 with a limited two-week discount to $19.99, the build includes over 30 tracks, four major boss “Idols,” an Infinite Disco replay mode, global leaderboards, character customization, skill trees and a My Music feature that lets players import their own songs. Early coverage from outlets including IGN, Polygon and CNET praised the game’s tight, music-synced combat—drawing comparisons to Hi‑Fi Rush and Arkham-style counter systems—while noting thin narrative scaffolding and a soundtrack that could be strengthened. The Early Access roadmap targets a full 1.0 release in 2027 and positions user-generated content and soundtrack sales as potential longevity drivers. The release supports modding-friendly features and multi-language text and audio, and has attracted rapid online interest and streaming clips since launch.

Take-Two warns of high stakes for GTA 6

📰 Full Story

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told media this week that expectations for Grand Theft Auto 6 are “so high” they are “terrifying,” and said the company has effectively given Rockstar “unlimited financial, creative human resources” to deliver a landmark product. Analysts cited by outlets predict huge first-day demand — as many as 25 million copies within 24 hours — and project up to $7.6 billion in revenue in the first 60 days. Industry commentators estimate GTA 6’s development budget could range from several hundred million dollars to $1 billion-$1.5 billion. Zelnick confirmed the studio’s heavy use of AI tools (including Claude and Gemini) to boost efficiency but warned that new tools often expand ambition rather than cut costs. He also indicated Rockstar will prioritise console launches, with a November 19, 2026 release date reported. Investors remain sensitive: Take-Two shares are off about 11% year-to-date amid broader market concerns about AI lowering barriers to game creation and competitive pressure from new tools such as Google’s Genie 3.

Activision confirmed in early May 2026 that the next Call of Duty title is not being developed for PlayStation 4, quashing online rumours that a last‑generation release was in testing. The company’s official Call of Duty account on X said “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.” Outlets report the move will likely extend to Xbox One, meaning the 2026 entry (widely expected to be Modern Warfare 4) will target PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC only. The decision ends a prolonged period of cross‑generation releases that stretched back through multiple Call of Duty instalments. Industry commentary highlights a trade‑off: developers gain technical headroom to advance graphics and features, but millions of PS4/Xbox One users may be excluded. The change follows Microsoft’s altered Xbox Game Pass strategy — new Call of Duty titles will no longer appear on Game Pass at launch and will be added later in the holiday season. Analysts also note broader market factors, including higher current‑gen console prices and ongoing semiconductor constraints that complicate hardware upgrades for some players.

Multiple hands-on previews published May 5, 2026 show Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight — developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Games — as a major reinvention of the Lego franchise that borrows heavily from Rocksteady’s Arkham series. The game, due May 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Switch 2, features an expansive, multi-island open-world Gotham, upgraded counter-based combat, stealth sections, character-specific gadgets and small RPG elements such as skill trees and unlockable moves. Previewers praised the blend of slapstick Lego humour with faithful references to decades of Batman media, a cohesive single narrative that retells Bruce Wayne’s origin, and deeper systems (difficulty tiers including a “Dark Knight” mode where the player can lose). Critics noted some rough edges — rudimentary stealth, occasional traversal clunkiness and a reduced playable roster (roughly seven characters) — but generally called it a creative, accessible “Diet Arkham” that expands what Lego games can do while retaining family-friendly charm.
