An army chaplain who was stabbed outside Renmore Barracks in Galway in August 2024 and three members of the Defence Forces who intervened will receive distinguished service medals next month, the Defence Forces said.
Father Paul Murphy was attacked as he returned to the main gate; he suffered multiple stab wounds.
The assailant, a teenager at the time, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was later sentenced to detention, with reports saying a 10-year term with two years suspended.
Private Ciara Shanahan, Corporal Daniel Padden and Private Dylan Geraghty were cited for âswift and courageousâ action: Shanahan alerted the guard, Padden issued warnings and prepared to escalate force, and Geraghty tackled and restrained the attacker.
The Defence Forces said personnel provided immediate medical aid and secured the scene.
Authorities found material indicating the youth had been influenced by Islamist extremist content.
The awards will be presented by the Minister for Defence at a ceremony in Renmore.
