Democrat Taylor Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss in a shock special election runoff for Texas State Senate District 9, winning roughly 57% to 43% on Saturday and flipping a seat President Donald Trump carried by 17 points in 2024.
Rehmet, an Air Force veteran, machinist and union leader, will be the first Democrat to represent the district in more than four decades.
The contest followed a low-turnout runoff after no candidate secured a majority in November; local reports cited turnout near 15%. The result prompted urgent reactions from Republican leaders â including Sens.
Ted Cruz and state Lt.
Gov.
Dan Patrick â and warnings from GOP lawmakers and strategists that Hispanic voters and turnout failures cost the party.
Democrats and the DNC hailed the win as evidence of momentum and stronger Latino support, while Republicans blamed turnout, weather and national immigration enforcement controversies for the 14-point swing.
Rehmet and Wambsganss are set to face each other again in the November 2026 general election for a full four-year term.
