UK health authorities have warned the public to stop using certain non-sterile alcohol-free cleansing wipes after an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis linked to products used between January 2018 and February 3, 2026.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) say 59 confirmed cases have been associated with the wipes and one death has been attributed to the infection.
Four specific brands were identified during investigations and testing in 2025: ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free, Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, and Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes (the latter showing a Burkholderia strain not related to the main outbreak). Regulators issued seller notices and product withdrawals in mid-2025, but warn that affected items may still be present in first-aid kits or homes.
Authorities advise disposing of any non-sterile alcohol-free wipes, not using such products on broken skin or intravenous lines, and that immunocompromised people (including those with cystic fibrosis) are at heightened risk.
Symptoms can include redness, swelling, pain and pus at infection sites.
