Dr.
Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, on Feb. 8 urged Americans to get the measles vaccine amid growing outbreaks across multiple states, saying on CNNâs State of the Union: âTake the vaccine, please.â Public health authorities have reported hundreds of confirmed cases in 2026, with an upstate South Carolina outbreak surpassing last yearâs Texas total and state officials reporting about 920 cases in early February.
Outbreaks have also been identified along the UtahâArizona border and in more than a dozen states.
Federal vaccination rates have fallen since 2019 and public hesitancy has risen, a trend health experts and the Pan American Health Organization say risks the U.S. losing its measles elimination status; PAHO will review the situation in April.
The Biden-era reversal of long-standing vaccine guidance under the current administration â including removal of some routine childhood vaccine recommendations and public skepticism from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. â has intensified scrutiny of official messaging.
Oz said Medicare and Medicaid will continue to cover measles vaccination and that access will not be a barrier.
