On Feb. 9, 2026, the NHS confirmed selected pharmacies across England will offer free blood pressure checks to people aged 40 and over who are unaware they have high blood pressure and who have not had a measurement in the past six months.
Tests are carried out by a pharmacist or healthcare assistant using an upperâarm cuff.
Depending on the result, patients may be advised to see their GP, receive lifestyle guidance, or be given a home monitoring kit for follow-up.
Readings for registered patients will be added to GP records and only escalated if levels are very high or very low.
NHS thresholds cited: professional readings of 140/90 mmHg (135/85 at home) are classed as high for most adults; higher thresholds apply for those aged 80 and over.
The service is intended to increase detection of undiagnosed hypertension, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
Participating pharmacies can be located via the NHS website; anyone with concerning symptoms should contact their GP or NHS 111.
