On Feb. 9, 2026 Andy Hines and Alison Gaffney told BBC Breakfast how their son Fraser was diagnosed with leukaemia at 17 months and ânearly diedâ; he is now nine and faces a shortened life expectancy after a transplant and heightened risk of secondary cancer.
The interview framed longârunning local concerns over pollution from the former Corby steelworks in Northamptonshire, a site highlighted in the Netflix series Toxic Town.
Families say they have seen unusually high numbers of birth defects and childhood cancers.
A 2009 High Court ruling found Corby Borough Council negligent over cleanâup relating to limb deformities, and last month North Northamptonshire Council published analyses saying childhood cancer rates in Corby are not higher than expected.
Parents and campaigners have demanded release of the raw data underlying that conclusion.
The council says strict dataâprotection rules prevent sharing but has acknowledged being made aware of a document suggesting some waste may have been moved to another location.
Lawyer Des Collins and affected families are calling for a statutory public inquiry; the council says it does not yet consider the threshold for asking government to open one has been met.
