Indian authorities have stepped up surveillance and containment after confirmed outbreaks of avian influenza in southern India in early February 2026.
Tests at the Bhopal-based National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) confirmed avian influenza in poultry from Ammagaripalli and Puttavaripalli villages in Sodam mandal, Annamayya district (lab confirmation dated Feb. 8). Rapid Response Teams were deployed, culling carried out at affected farms, movement of birds restricted and disinfection and enhanced surveillance imposed under standard operating procedures with coordination among animal husbandry, revenue, police, panchayat raj and health departments.
Officials reported about 40â50 sudden bird deaths over the weekend and said additional samples from Chittoor and nearby mandals have been sent for testing.
Separately, state authorities in Tamil Nadu activated high alert after unusual crow mortalities and issued public health advisories.
Authorities emphasise that properly cooked poultry remains safe to eat and that human infections are rare, while urging poultry workers and farmers to follow biosecurity measures and report abnormal bird deaths.
Compensation measures for affected farmers have been promised by local collectors as containment actions continue.
