Nearly 15,000 nurses from five private New York City hospitals have been on strike since Jan. 12.
On Feb. 9 the New York State Nurses Association announced tentative agreements covering about 10,500 nurses at Montefiore and the Mount Sinai system (including Mount Sinai Hospital, Morningside and West). The proposed three-year contracts call for roughly a 12% pay increase, enforceable safe-staffing ratios, strengthened protections against workplace violence, maintenance of existing health benefits with no added out-of-pocket costs, and limits on use of artificial intelligence, the union said.
The pacts were negotiated after marathon sessions at the Javits Center and will be subject to ratification votes; if approved nurses are expected to return within days (some reports cite Feb. 14, others a 72-hour return). About 4,000 nurses remain on strike at NewYork-Presbyterian as talks continue.
The monthlong walkout prompted cancellations of elective surgeries, patient transfers and more than $100 million in temporary staffing costs for hospitals.
