FIFA has reiterated that the 2026 World Cup will go ahead “as scheduled” and with “all teams” participating despite talks by Iran’s football federation to relocate its group matches from the United States to Mexico amid security concerns.
The comments from FIFA president Gianni Infantino followed public remarks by Iran FA president Mehdi Taj saying Iran would “boycott the United States but not the World Cup” after US President Donald Trump said he could not guarantee the team’s safety.
Iran are due to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle; the team’s base camp is slated for Tucson, Arizona.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico was prepared to host Iran’s first-round games if FIFA agreed, while FIFA spokespeople have so far emphasised adherence to the match schedule announced in December 2025 and noted the logistical and commercial complications of late changes.
Tournament organizers and confederations are continuing consultations; a final decision on any relocation or a potential withdrawal is expected only after further talks and ahead of FIFA’s April 30 congress in Vancouver.
