The Ottawa Senators beat the New York Rangers 2-1 on Monday night, continuing a late-season surge while suffering significant blow to their depleted defence.
Shane Pinto opened the scoring on a power play and Warren Foegele added a second-period goal as James Reimer made eight saves.
Ottawa held the Rangers to nine shots on goal — the fewest allowed by an NHL team since 2003 and a franchise record for Ottawa.
However, Thomas Chabot exited after the first period with a right-arm/wrist injury after a slash by J.T. Miller and did not return; Lassi Thomson left in the second with a lower-body issue.
Coach Travis Green said both will be “out for a while.” The Senators, already missing Jake Sanderson, Nick Jensen and Dennis Gilbert, recalled AHL prospects Carter Yakemchuk and Jorian Donovan on Tuesday; both could make their NHL debuts against the Detroit Red Wings as Ottawa chases a wild-card spot and sits two points behind the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference standings.
