Spanish police opened an investigation after sections of the crowd at Tuesday’s friendly between Spain and Egypt at RCDE Stadium in Cornella de Llobregat near Barcelona were heard chanting anti‑Muslim and xenophobic slogans, including “who doesn’t jump is a Muslim.” The March 31 match ended 0‑0 and was a World Cup warm‑up fixture moved from Qatar because of the war in the Middle East.
Catalonia’s Mossos d’Esquadra said they were investigating the incident on April 1.
Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim, publicly condemned the chants as “ignorant and racist.” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Justice Minister Félix Bolaños and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also denounced the behaviour.
Stadium operators displayed anti‑discrimination warnings on the big screens and made PA announcements during the game, but chanting continued.
The Egyptian Football Association criticised the jeering of its national anthem and said it would work with FIFA and other bodies.
The episode renews scrutiny of racism in Spanish football after previous high‑profile cases, and authorities say they will seek to identify and sanction those responsible.
