Major cruise operators are altering Alaska itineraries for the 2026 season and avoiding Tracy Arm fjord after a massive landslide and tsunami on Aug. 10, 2025.
The collapse above the toe of the South Sawyer Glacier sent water surging up the opposite mountainside, swept gear from nearby kayakers and prompted U.S. Geological Survey warnings that the area remains hazardous and susceptible to continued rockfall and localized tsunamis.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the initial event, but ongoing instability has led at least seven lines — including Holland America, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Virgin Voyages, among others — to replace Tracy Arm calls with visits to nearby Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier.
Some smaller or expedition operators are monitoring conditions but have not universally changed plans.
Scientists are studying the failed slope to assess broader risks in the fjord network.
The season’s first Alaska ports are scheduled in late April 2026, and operators say passenger safety is driving the itinerary shifts.
