A significant blaze broke out at Viva Energy’s Geelong (Corio) refinery just after 11pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, damaging units in the motor gasoline (mogas) plant and prompting a large emergency response.
Fire Rescue Victoria and other crews fought the fire into Thursday; it was contained to the affected plant area but not immediately under control early on.
There were reports of explosions and heavy smoke; all refinery staff were accounted for and no injuries have been reported.
The Geelong refinery can process about 120,000 barrels per day and supplies more than half of Victoria’s fuel and roughly 10% of Australia’s.
Authorities said petrol production is likely to be most affected while diesel and jet fuel continued at reduced rates as a safety precaution.
Local air-quality and firewater runoff monitoring is under way and an investigation into the cause will follow.
The incident comes amid global supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict, and federal officials are reviewing options to secure additional fuel imports and manage domestic supplies.
