The United Kingdom and the European Union signed legal texts on April 15-16, 2026 allowing Britain to rejoin the EU's Erasmus+ student exchange programme, five years after leaving following Brexit.
The UK will re-enter the scheme from January 1, 2027, with more than 100,000 people expected to benefit in the first year.
London has agreed a one-year participation deal for 2027 and will contribute Ā£570 million (ā¬655m/$774m) toward programme costs ā a figure the government says reflects a roughly 30% discount on the default contribution rate.
The agreement covers students, apprentices, trainees and placements in companies, cultural exchanges and sports initiatives.
The British Council is set to resume its role as the UKās national agency to administer participation, subject to formal confirmation by the European Commission later in 2026.
The move follows a December 2025 announcement by the UK government to rejoin Erasmus and comes amid Prime Minister Keir Starmerās drive to reset UK-EU relations.
Non-EU member Switzerland is also joining the scheme under parallel arrangements.
