Chinese President Xi Jinping on April 15 met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Beijing, urging closer and more resilient strategic coordination between China and Russia as global tensions rise.
Speaking at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said the âstabilityâ and âcertaintyâ of bilateral ties were particularly valuable amid what he called a once-in-a-century change, and asked Lavrov to convey his sincere regards to President Vladimir Putin.
Beijing and Moscow flagged plans for a summit later this year, with reports saying Putin will visit China in the first half of 2026.
Officials highlighted sustained economic and people-to-people links â bilateral trade reached $228.1 billion in 2025, reciprocal visa-free ordinary passport travel is in place, and 2026â27 have been designated China-Russia Years of Education.
Xi called for coordinated action within forums such as the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS to defend legitimate interests, uphold the Global South and promote multilateralism.
Lavrov said Russia stands ready to deepen cooperation across politics, trade, culture and diplomacy, framing the relationship as an anchor of stability amid a âcomplex external environment.â
