Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told reporters in pre-draft media sessions April 16-17 that he expects an unusually active first round at next week’s NFL Draft, forecasting “a lot of trades” as teams jockey for closely graded prospects.
Veach said the top of this class is unusually compact — with tackles, defensive ends and receivers graded closely — which he believes will encourage movement on draft night.
The Chiefs hold two first-round picks, Nos. 9 and 29, giving them flexibility to move up or down; Veach outlined multiple positional possibilities for No. 9 including edge rusher, offensive tackle and safety, and stressed the team’s need for defensive help around stars such as Chris Jones.
He also flagged safety and receiver among positions that could be considered early depending on how the board falls, and suggested the Chiefs could find depth at defensive end later in the draft.
Veach reiterated a preference for selecting impact players who can help immediately and said the compressed grading should make the first round entertaining for fans.
