On April 17, 2026 UK consumer group Which? published laboratory tests showing that 133 of 208 smartphone models released since October 2022āabout 64%ācan be unlocked using a simple 2D printed photograph.
The failures span dozens of Android models from brands including Motorola, OnePlus, Nothing, Oppo, Fairphone, Nokia, Realme, Vivo and some Samsung handsets; Which? highlighted flagship failures such as the Oppo Find X9 Pro and older Galaxy S25 variants.
By contrast, Appleās Face ID, Googleās more advanced Pixel flagships (Pixel 8ā10) and Samsungās Galaxy S26 series resisted spoofing.
Which? also criticised many manufacturers for not giving clear, prominent warnings during setup that 2D face unlock can be bypassed, and said it will not endorse phones that fail the test without adequate user warnings.
The group recommends users switch to fingerprint or PIN protection, and flagged broader risks to access for email, banking and wallet apps.
Separately, reporting by MIT Technology Review noted online kits that automate bypassing liveness checks, underscoring wider fraud concerns.
