📰 Full Story
A life jacket worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first‑class passenger who survived the 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic, sold for £670,000 (about $906,000) at a Henry Aldridge & Son auction in Devizes, England on April 18.
The cream‑coloured cork‑filled canvas vest is signed by Francatelli and several fellow occupants of Lifeboat No. 1 and was the highlight of a sale of 344 lots of Titanic memorabilia.
The final price, paid by an anonymous telephone bidder, far exceeded the pre‑sale estimate of £250,000–£350,000.
Also sold were a lifeboat seat cushion that fetched £390,000 and was bought by the owners of Titanic museum attractions in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri, and a gold watch recovered from a victim that sold for about £180,000.
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said the results reflected enduring public interest in the Titanic and the personal stories of its passengers and crew.
The jacket has previously been displayed in museums in the United States and Europe and is believed to be one of only a handful of identifiable survivor life jackets still extant.
