Iran on April 18-19 publicly rebuked the European Union after EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged that transit through the Strait of Hormuz remain “open and free of charge.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei accused the EU of “double standards” and hypocrisy, saying Europe selectively invokes international law while overlooking alleged U.S. and Israeli aggression.
Baghaei insisted Iran, as a coastal state, retains rights to take “necessary measures” in the strait and dismissed the notion of unconditional transit amid the presence of U.S. military assets.
Tehran has signalled it may prioritise ships that comply with new protocols and pay for “security and safety services.” The exchanges follow warnings from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps restricting passage until what it calls a naval blockade on Iranian vessels is lifted.
The EU has said it could expand naval missions to safeguard shipping once hostilities ease and warned that any pay-for-passage scheme would set a dangerous precedent for global maritime routes.
The dispute comes amid wider regional hostilities that have already disrupted shipping and raised international legal questions.
