Andrew Lloyd Webber, the 78-year-old British composer behind hits including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, has publicly described himself as a "recovering alcoholic" in an interview with The Times published April 18.
He said he sought help about 16 months ago after entering a "downhill spiral" that left his family "in a desperate state" and that his wife, Madeleine, felt she "couldn't go on." Lloyd Webber said an initial stay in a clinic did not work but that attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings â which he now goes to daily in the UK, Switzerland and the US â has been life-changing.
He acknowledged earlier periods of sobriety in 2015â16 but admitted he resumed secret drinking.
The composer is continuing professional work â including a new Broadway tribute and two new musicals â and is selling the remainder of his wine collection via Christieâs.
He said sobriety has renewed his perspective and described AA as an environment where "everybody's equal."
