A massive explosion tore through the Vanaja firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu on April 19, 2026, killing dozens and injuring others, officials said.
Reports from local and national outlets varied as authorities continued rescue work: police and PTI-linked sources reported at least 18 bodies recovered and six injured (four in critical condition), while other outlets and the district collector gave higher tolls of up to 23 dead and said a second blast during rescue operations injured additional personnel.
The unit, owned by Muthumanickam, reportedly held a licence from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Hundreds of workers were believed to be on site at the time; preliminary accounts suggest the blast originated in a veranda where raw materials and finishing work were underway.
Multiple rooms collapsed, fire crews battled ongoing detonations of stored crackers, and officials have launched a probe.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and President Droupadi Murmu offered condolences and dispatched ministers and officials to the scene.
