Pope Leo XIV used a Mass outside Luanda and a visit to the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima on April 19, 2026, to urge Angolans to overcome the legacies of civil war, corruption and exploitation.
Vatican officials said roughly 100,000-130,000 people attended the Kilamba open-air Mass before the pontiff flew by helicopter to Muxima, a 16th-century shrine that was once a hub of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
The US-born pope met President JoĂŁo Lourenço, denounced a âlogic of extractivismâ tied to social and environmental harm, and called for the healing of corruption and building a more just society.
He appealed for peace internationally, deploring intensification of the Ukraine war and praising a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
Angola, a major producer of oil, diamonds and other minerals, still faces deep poverty â more than 30% of its roughly 36â38 million people live below extreme-poverty thresholds â and the government has proposed a major basilica and development works at Muxima, which some critics say distract from public needs.
