Heated Rivalry showrunner Jacob Tierney told a BookCon audience in New York that the Crave/HBO Max queer hockey drama is entering “much more serious territory” in its second season.
Speaking alongside series author Rachel Reid, Tierney said season two will draw primarily on Reid’s sequel The Long Game — set a decade after the events of Heated Rivalry — and will also incorporate material from Role Model.
The new instalment will explore Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov’s (Connor Storrie) lives as a secret couple confronting the everyday complexities of a long-term relationship rather than the adolescent “hotel-room” danger that dominated season one.
Tierney has brought on Michael Goldbach as a co-writer and said adaptation presents fresh challenges in tone and character development; he has suggested The Long Game’s scope could stretch across multiple seasons.
The showrunner also signalled deeper material for secondary characters Troy and Harris, describing Troy as “quite damaged” and saying the series will dig into that arc.
Heated Rivalry season two is being written now and is expected to be released next year.
