British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under intense political pressure after revelations that Lord Peter Mandelson was appointed UK ambassador to Washington despite failing a security vetting recommendation.
Government documents released this month showed UK Security Vetting advised against clearance in January 2025, but the Foreign Office overruled that advice and Mandelson took up the post; he was sacked in September 2025 after further details emerged about his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The latest disclosures ā and the revelation that Downing Street was not told the vetting had been failed ā have prompted opposition demands for Starmerās resignation and renewed scrutiny of senior officials.
Olly Robbins, the Foreign Office permanent secretary at the time, was dismissed and is expected to be questioned by MPs.
Senior ministers including Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall have publicly backed Starmer, saying he would have blocked the appointment had he known.
The prime minister is due to make a statement to MPs and face questions in the House of Commons this week as calls mount for a parliamentary probe and as Labour braces for local and devolved elections on May 7.
