San Jose Sharks teenage forward Macklin Celebrini said he is open to signing a contract extension this summer after a record-breaking second NHL season in which he totaled 115 points (45 goals, 70 assists), surpassing Joe Thornton’s franchise single-season points mark.
Celebrini is on the second year of a three-year, $2.925 million entry-level deal and has one season remaining; he can sign an extension any time after July 1 and would be a restricted free agent after next season.
The Sharks missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a seventh straight year, finishing just outside a wild-card spot.
Under the new NHL collective bargaining agreement, this will be the last summer players can sign eight-year extensions with their current clubs; from Sept. 18 the maximum length for such deals will be seven years.
Celebrini said he has discussed the approach with Chicago’s Connor Bedard and expressed a desire to commit to San Jose, while general manager Mike Grier said the club would like to work toward a deal this offseason.
