DENVER, April 19 — Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves in his first Stanley Cup Playoffs start and the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in Game 1 on Sunday.
Artturi Lehkonen opened the scoring in the second period off a Nathan MacKinnon shot and Logan O’Connor added a third-period tally — his first goal since March 31, 2025 after hip surgery — to provide the decisive margin.
Artemi Panarin cut the deficit with a power-play goal with 2:22 remaining, but Los Angeles could not find an equalizer.
Anton Forsberg stopped 28 shots in his NHL postseason debut for the Kings.
The game grew physical late, producing multiple roughing penalties and a combined 84 hits.
Wedgewood, who had led the league in goals-against average and save percentage this season, was chosen over Mackenzie Blackwood for the start.
Colorado, the Presidents’ Trophy winner and top seed in the West, will host Game 2 at Ball Arena on Tuesday night.
