Federal authorities arrested Shamim Mafi, a 44-year-old Iranian-born lawful permanent U.S. resident from Woodland Hills, California, at Los Angeles International Airport on April 18, 2026, on charges of brokering weapons sales on behalf of Iran to Sudan.
A criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorneyâs Office for the Central District of California alleges Mafi arranged deals for Iranian-made Mohajer-6 armed drones, bombs, bomb fuses and millions of rounds of ammunition, including a contract valued at more than $70 million for drones and transfers of 55,000 bomb fuses.
Prosecutors say Mafi used an Oman-registered company, Atlas International Business, and routed transactions through Turkey and the UAE to evade detection.
Phone and transaction records in a 68-page complaint reportedly show roughly 62 contacts between Mafi and an officer of Iranâs Ministry of Intelligence and Security from December 2022 to June 2025.
She faces charges under U.S. sanctions law (50 U.S.C. § 1705) and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years; an initial court appearance in federal court in downtown Los Angeles was scheduled for the Monday following her arrest.
Authorities are probing wider networks connected to the alleged brokering.
