The U.S. Department of Justice has demanded that Wayne County, Michigan, turn over all ballots and related materials from the November 2024 election, escalating a wider federal push to obtain election records.
In a letter dated April 14, signed by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, the DOJ cited three local convictions and five lawsuits alleging fraud and gave county officials 14 days to produce ballots, ballot receipts and ballot envelopes.
Michigan officials â including Attorney General Dana Nessel, Gov.
Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson â have rebuffed the request as baseless federal interference and vowed to fight it.
The demand comes amid a broader effort by the Trump administration to access election data from roughly 29 states and Washington, D.C., including subpoenas in Maricopa County and seizures in Fulton County, and follows an executive order aiming to tighten mail-voting rules.
Legal setbacks have occurred in other states, and Michigan officials say the cited prosecutions show safeguards are working and that the request improperly targets local election administrators.
