New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on April 19 described his ties with President Donald Trump as “honest, direct and productive” in a televised interview marking his first 100 days in office.
Mamdani said shared New York roots produce unusually granular conversations on city matters and credited the working relationship for practical outcomes, including Trump’s involvement in securing the release of a detained Columbia student.
The mayor has met with Trump at the White House at least twice since his November election.
The cordial tone sits alongside a public spat: Trump criticized Mamdani on Truth Social, saying the mayor was “destroying New York” over a proposed pied-à-terre tax on non-primary residences worth more than $5 million.
Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul say the tax would raise about $500 million to fund priorities such as expanded free child care, a program Mamdani has already begun rolling out for two- and three-year-olds.
Mamdani also used the appearance to push back at national Democrats, urging a clearer vision for the party while defending his progressive policy agenda at City Hall.
