North Korea on Apr. 19-20 conducted multiple short-range ballistic missile tests, state media and regional militaries said, in a development that underscores Pyongyang’s accelerating weapons programme.
KCNA said leader Kim Jong Un supervised five launches of upgraded Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical missiles armed with warheads designed to carry cluster munitions and fragmentation mines, striking an island target zone roughly 136-140 km away and covering about 12.5-13 hectares.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs and Japan’s defence ministry detected the launches from the Sinpo area; Seoul convened an emergency security meeting and coordinated intelligence with U.S. and Japanese counterparts.
The tests were the fourth missile launch in April and the seventh this year, according to regional officials.
The moves follow recent North Korean trials of ship-launched cruise missiles, upgraded solid-fuel engines and other systems, and come as the IAEA has reported a rapid increase in activity at North Korean nuclear sites.
Pyongyang’s state media framed the tests as improving concentrated suppression and high-precision striking capability while officials abroad warned the launches violate U.N. sanctions and heighten regional tensions.
