The U.S. National Security Agency has been using Anthropicâs newest model, Mythos Preview, even as the Department of Defense designated the company a formal âsupply chain riskâ and sought to restrict its use, multiple reports said on April 19-20, 2026.
Anthropic limited Mythos access to roughly 40 organisations because of its potent coding and agentic capabilities; the NSA is reported to be among unnamed users and the model is said to be employed to scan systems for vulnerabilities.
The dispute escalated earlier in 2026 when the Pentagon urged vendors to cut ties with Anthropic during contract renegotiations after the company resisted allowing certain military applications.
Anthropic has since sued the Defense Department and won a preliminary injunction in one court while losing a motion in another.
Company CEO Dario Amodei held talks with senior White House officials amid the row, and counterparts in the United Kingdom have also been given channels to access similar capabilities.
Officials have declined to comment publicly on operational details, and the extent of Mythos deployment across U.S. intelligence and defence components remains unclear.
