Jonathan Klinsmann, 29, suffered a fractured neck after a collision late in Cesena’s Serie B match against Palermo, the club and multiple reports said.
The goalkeeper — son of former Germany striker and ex-US coach Jürgen Klinsmann — was stretchered off in a neck brace and taken to Palermo’s Villa Sofia-Cervello hospital.
Initial tests found a fracture to the first cervical vertebra and a laceration to the back of his head; he spent the night under observation and is scheduled for further tests and a neurosurgical consultation.
Klinsmann posted on social media that the injury will end his season.
Cesena, coached by Ashley Cole, sit eighth and are pursuing a promotion play-off spot; they will need to replace their starting goalkeeper for the remaining fixtures.
Born in Germany and raised in the United States, Klinsmann has represented the US at youth level and received senior call-ups but remains uncapped.
The injury is widely expected to rule him out of contention for the US squad for the 2026 World Cup.
