Cornerstone has taken international sales rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand) to James Ashcroft’s horror feature When Darkness Loves Us and will launch the title to buyers at the Cannes Film Market in May.
The film, adapted from Elizabeth Engstrom’s 1980s novella, stars Emilia Clarke as a woman who returns to the surface after 15 years trapped underground to reclaim a family she believes is hers.
The cast also includes Victoria Pedretti, Marlon Williams and Natascha McElhone.
Principal photography recently wrapped in New Zealand and Bleecker Street is handling U.S. distribution with a planned 2027 release; Umbrella Entertainment will distribute in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Producers include Desray Armstrong and executive producers from Bleecker Street and Umbrella.
Financing credits include the New Zealand Film Commission, Images & Sound and the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate, with cashflow financing from Hinterland and Natixis Coficiné. Cornerstone said it expects the film’s psychological, visually driven approach and Clarke’s profile to resonate with international buyers at Cannes.
