A top envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump, Paolo Zampolli, has publicly urged FIFA and the White House to replace Iran with Italy at the 2026 World Cup, the Financial Times reported on April 22-23.
Zampolli — an Italian native who confirmed he raised the idea with both Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino — said four-time winners Italy have the pedigree to justify inclusion after failing to qualify.
Iran qualified for the tournament but has sought to move its U.S. group-stage matches to Mexico amid the ongoing conflict; FIFA has said matches will proceed as scheduled and Infantino has repeatedly insisted Iran will play.
FIFA regulations give the governing body discretion to name a replacement if a qualified member withdraws, but stakeholders including the White House, FIFA, the Italian Football Federation and Iran’s federation did not immediately comment.
The proposal is reported to be partly aimed at repairing strained ties between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following disputes over the Pope and the Iran war.
With the World Cup due to start June 11, any change would require rapid decisions and would be politically contentious.
