New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel announced April 22–23 that he will begin counseling this weekend and will not be with the team for Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.
The decision follows publication of photos showing Vrabel and longtime NFL reporter Dianna Russini together at a Sedona, Arizona resort; Russini resigned from The Athletic amid an internal review.
Vrabel, 50, told ESPN and addressed reporters at the team facility he has had “difficult conversations” with family, staff and players and wants to avoid being a distraction.
The NFL has said it is not investigating Vrabel.
The coach is expected to participate in the draft’s opening rounds Thursday and Friday night and return to seek counseling Saturday; Patriots personnel chief Eliot Wolf and other executives will lead the team’s work on Day 3, when New England holds multiple late-round picks.
The team confirmed Vrabel will remain in contact with staff while away and said the move is meant to prioritize family and personal accountability.
