A midday shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on April 23, 2026, left at least one person dead and multiple others wounded after two groups argued and exchanged gunfire in the mall food court, authorities said.
Initial reports varied; several outlets early on said as many as 10 people were injured and some shooters were at large, while later police briefings said five people were injured and five individuals were in custody.
The incident was reported around 1:22ā1:30 p.m. local time and was initially treated as an activeāshooter scene before officers said there was no ongoing threat.
Local hospitals treated victims, with several requiring surgery.
Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas (T.J.) Morse Jr. appealed for witness video; the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting the investigation.
Mayor Sid Edwards and Governor Jeff Landry urged the public to avoid the area and praised first responders.
The Mall of Louisiana was temporarily closed.
