Ukraine said on May 6, 2026 that Russia flouted a Kyiv-proposed open-ended ceasefire that was due to start at midnight, carrying out dozens of assaults, air strikes and drone attacks across eastern and southern regions.
Ukrainian officials reported heavy damage in Zaporizhzhia, Kramatorsk, Dnipro, Poltava and Sumy, including a kindergarten hit in Sumy, and said at least 22â27 civilians were killed and dozens more wounded.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Moscow of âobvious spurningâ of peace after officials tallied hundreds to thousands of violations (Zelenskiy cited 1,820 by late morning). Kyiv also continued long-range strikes into Russian territory and Russian-occupied Crimea.
Moscow said it would hold a reduced Victory Day parade on May 9 and warned foreign diplomats in Kyiv to evacuate, threatening retaliatory strikes if commemorations were disrupted.
Both sides gave conflicting tallies of intercepted drones and air defences, underscoring the fog of war and sharp mutual recriminations.
