Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde was hospitalised after a training-ground altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni earlier this week, the club and media reported.
Valverde sustained a head laceration and was diagnosed with cranioencephalic trauma; Real said he will miss 10-14 days and will not feature in Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona.
The club opened disciplinary proceedings and fined both players €500,000 each.
Manager Álvaro Arbeloa said on May 9 that both players have apologised, that he will not “publicly crucify” them and that dressing-room incidents should stay internal.
Arbeloa accepted ultimate responsibility for the squad’s form and expressed frustration about media leaks from the club.
Reports said the dispute began in training and continued in the dressing room; Tchouaméni returned to training and is available for selection.
The clash comes as Real sit well behind league leaders Barcelona, who can clinch the LaLiga title this weekend, and has fuelled speculation over squad harmony and possible summer exits for the players involved.
