May 11 — The Montreal Canadiens overwhelmed the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal at the Bell Centre, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Cole Caufield ended a five-game scoring drought with a tiebreaking power-play goal and added an assist.
Alex Newhook scored twice, including an empty-netter, while Juraj Slafkovský, Zachary Bolduc and Kirby Dach also tallied.
Rookie goalie Jakub Dobeš rebounded from earlier struggles to make 26 saves; Buffalo’s Alex Lyon stopped 31.
Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin each had a goal and an assist for the Sabres.
Montreal capitalized on Buffalo’s discipline lapses — coach Lindy Ruff cited five offensive-zone penalties — and converted two power plays in the second period to break the game open.
The Canadiens, who had alternated wins and losses through much of the playoffs, won consecutive games for the first time this postseason.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday in Montreal, where the Canadiens will look to extend their momentum and the Sabres will seek answers to shore up puck management and goaltending.
