Martin Lewis, the 54-year-old financial journalist and founder of MoneySavingExpert, received the BAFTA Television Special Award at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London, on May 10, 2026.
Presented by Richard Osman, Lewis delivered an emotional acceptance speech â written on the Thursday that marked 42 years since his motherâs sudden death â recalling a childhood he described as âbrokenâ and saying he âbarely left the houseâ for six years apart from school.
BAFTA recognised his campaigning consumer journalism, citing work that helped people through pandemic support, influenced government reversals on energy hikes, pushed action on scam ads and challenged aggressive council tax debt collection.
From the stage he appealed to Chancellor Rachel Reeves over the planned freezing of the plan 2 student loan repayment threshold, called it âmorally wrong,â and thanked viewers, his wife Lara Lewington and daughter Sapphire.
Lewis was previously awarded an MBE (2014) and CBE (2022).
