Cole Tomas Allen, 31, pleaded not guilty on May 11 in federal court to four charges including attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon and multiple firearms counts.
Prosecutors allege Allen rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondentsâ Association dinner on April 25, fired a shotgun in an exchange of gunfire and struck a Secret Service agent who was protected by a ballistic vest.
Authorities say Allen traveled from Torrance, California, by train, checked into the hotel the night before and had a shotgun, a pistol, knives, ammunition and photos showing weapons.
An affidavit cites an apparent manifesto naming administration officials as targets.
Allen appeared shackled before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden; he remains in federal custody after being briefly placed on suicide watch.
His lawyers have filed motions seeking to disqualify Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro â both at the event â and possibly the D.C. U.S. Attorneyâs Office.
Prosecutors must respond by May 22; a further status hearing is set for June 29.
Conviction on the attempted-assassination count could carry life imprisonment.
