Renowned playback singer Suman Kalyanpur died at age 89 on the evening of Sunday, May 31, 2026, at her home in Lokhandwala, Mumbai, after suffering age-related ailments, friends and family said.
The Padma Bhushan awardee (2023) enjoyed a long career from the 1950s through the 1970s and was known for her honeyed voice across Hindi and multiple regional languages including Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Kannada and Odia.
Her best-known songs include âAajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche,â âNa Na Karte Pyar Tumhin Se,â âTumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aayeâ and several Marathi numbers such as âKetakichya Bani Tithe.â Kalyanpur also sang devotional songs, ghazals and thumris and was sometimes compared to Lata Mangeshkar, with whom she recorded at least one duet.
Political leaders and public figures including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Sharad Pawar paid tribute.
Her last rites were scheduled for Monday at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai.
She is survived by her daughter, Charu.
