NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and deputy commissioner Mark Tatum reiterated plans to launch a new NBA Europe competition in October 2027, saying the project remains on schedule.
The proposed 16-team league would include 12 permanent franchises and four qualification spots; final bids for permanent franchises are due by the end of June 2026 with awards expected by autumn.
The NBA is working closely with FIBA and says talks with the EuroLeague are ongoing but it will proceed with partners if no agreement is reached.
Reports suggest permanent-franchise fees could range from $500 million to $1 billion.
Ownership rules remain unresolved: active NBA players are currently barred from owning teams, yet players such as Luka Dončić are reported to be part of investor groups (a Rome bid). Target cities under consideration include Paris, Manchester, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Rome, Berlin, Munich, Athens and Istanbul.
Silver also reiterated domestic expansion discussions for Seattle and Las Vegas, with a Board decision expected by the end of 2026, and called for timely resolution of the Los Angeles Clippers investigation.
