A cluster of gas-filled party balloons ignited and exploded inside a residential elevator in Goregaon West, Mumbai, on Feb. 2, 2026, sending a brief fireball through the cabin, police and local media said.
CCTV footage widely shared on social media shows a delivery worker carrying about a dozen balloons in a polythene bag enter the lift; moments later the inflatables burst into flames, and three people rushed out.
Two — identified in local reports as 21-year-old Himani Tapriya and 32-year-old delivery worker Raju Kumar Mahato — were treated for burn injuries and are reported in stable condition.
Authorities have opened a negligence case against the balloon shop owner under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, saying safety instructions may not have been provided.
Investigators are probing what gas was used to inflate the balloons; helium is non-flammable, while hydrogen is highly combustible and has been linked to similar incidents.
Mumbai police warned against transporting flammable gas-filled balloons in enclosed spaces such as lifts and urged stricter precautions.
