Former FBI Director and special counsel Robert Mueller died at age 81, his former law firm and family confirmed, prompting an immediate and highly unusual response from President Donald Trump.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: âRobert Mueller just died.
Good, Iâm glad heâs dead.
He can no longer hurt innocent people!â The remark, posted shortly after news of Muellerâs death became public on March 21, drew swift condemnation from Democrats, Republicans and conservative commentators alike.
Mueller, a decorated Marine veteran and Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient, led the FBI from 2001 to 2013 and later headed the Justice Departmentâs Russia investigation into Trumpâs 2016 campaign, a probe that documented Russian interference and produced indictments and guilty pleas but did not charge Trump with conspiracy.
On television, figures including Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, Michael Steele and others called Trumpâs reaction indecent, hypocritical and beneath the dignity of the presidency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent offered a partial defense, arguing the president deserved âempathyâ because of the investigations and earlier Mar-a-Lago raid, though Mueller was not involved in that search.
Fact-checker Snopes said the Truth Social post was authentic.
The episode revived scrutiny of Trumpâs long-running hostility toward Mueller and broader questions about political norms around public mourning.
