On March 24-25, 2026 Russia mounted one of the largest aerial assaults of the war, firing nearly 1,000 strike drones in a 24-hour period, Kyiv and multiple western news agencies reported.
Ukraineâs air force said 392 drones were launched overnight and a further roughly 556 in an unusual daytime wave, with officials reporting most were shot down or suppressed by air defences and electronic warfare.
The strikes killed at least six people, wounded dozens and damaged civilian infrastructure including a building in Lvivâs UNESCO-listed historic centre and a maternity hospital in Ivano-Frankivsk.
The barrage was accompanied by cruise and ballistic missile launches and was described by analysts and Ukrainian commanders as the start of a spring offensive.
The attack cut a major IsacceaâVulcÄneČti power line that carries electricity from Romania to Moldova; Chisinau declared a 60-day energy state of emergency while repairs and demining are carried out.
Kyiv repeated urgent appeals for more air-defence munitions as allies weigh further military and diplomatic responses.

Iranian Shahed supplies plus Russian production underlie the surge in swarm strikes. The tactic exploits cost asymmetry, but Ukraineâs EW and cheaper kinetic measures blunt many drones; sustained waves risk depleting interceptor stocks and driving urgent allied aid requests.
