Discovery released the first teaser for their longâplanned Harry Potter television reboot on March 25â26, 2026, confirming the eightâepisode first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, will premiere at Christmas 2026.
The trailer, unveiled around HBO Maxâs U.K. launch event in London, introduces a new child cast led by Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione) and Alastair Stout (Ron), and adult actors including John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Nick Frost (Hagrid) and Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape). J.K. Rowling is listed as an executive producer; Francesca Gardiner is showrunner and Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes.
Reaction was polarised: many praised faithful, bookâaccurate detail and production values, while others criticised the teaserâs close visual echo of the original films and questioned casting choices.
The announcement has also prompted a wave of online abuse toward some cast members â notably racist threats against Essiedu â leading producers to beef up onâset security.
HBO has committed to a multiâseason plan to adapt each book and made a substantial financial investment in longâterm production infrastructure.
