Air Canada chief executive Michael Rousseau issued an apology on March 26, 2026 after facing widespread criticism for delivering an English-only video of condolence following a fatal runway collision at New Yorkâs LaGuardia Airport.
A regional Air Canada Express CRJâ900 operated by Jazz Aviation struck a Port Authority fire truck after landing from Montreal late on March 22; both pilots, Antoine Forest (a francophone from Quebec) and Mackenzie Gunther, were killed.
Rousseau said he was âdeeply saddenedâ that his inability to speak French had diverted attention from victimsâ families and Air Canada staff; the four-minute message included only âbonjourâ and âmerci,â with French subtitles.
Political leaders including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier François Legault criticised the unilingual remarks, Parliamentâs official languages committee has summoned Rousseau to testify, and Quebecâs National Assembly passed a non-binding 92â0 motion calling for his resignation.
The airline says it is cooperating with U.S. and Canadian investigators, including the NTSB, and that communications have been posted in both languages.
The episode has reignited debate over Air Canadaâs bilingual obligations and CEO bilingualism requirements.
